Full Project Story

From initial concept to final delivery –every detail of this custom fabrication project

1Project Background

As demand for high-precision analytical and diagnostic instruments surges, a leading portable medical and laboratory device manufacturer launched a 2026 program for 3,000 handheld units. Deployed in clinical diagnostics, environmental monitoring and field testing, the enclosures had to balance miniaturization, structural integrity and a refined, ergonomic feel.

The brief demanded ultra-tight dimensional accuracy, corrosion resistance, IP65 protection and integrated EMI shielding for sensitive sensors.

2Client Pain Points

Handheld instruments pack a lot of sensitive electronics into almost no space, and every fraction of a millimeter matters.

  • Extremely compact form factor leaves no room for alignment error with internal boards
  • Lightweight shell must still protect delicate sensor electronics from drops
  • Continuous EMI shielding is hard to fit inside a contoured mini enclosure
  • 3,000 units must look and measure identically despite the complex geometry

3Technical Challenges

The engineering challenge was miniaturized precision. At roughly 150 x 80 x 30mm, the enclosure could not afford any offset against the internal circuit boards, and a bent edge had to feel comfortable in the hand while sealing to IP65.

  • Nitrogen-assisted laser cutting to avoid warping thin 0.8mm aluminum
  • 9-axis CNC bending with micro-jigs and springback held within 0.02mm
  • Laser-cut conductive gaskets bonded for continuous EMI shielding coverage
  • Micro locating pins on the body to mate perfectly with the PCB

4Our Custom Solution

Sanjun ran production under ISO 13485 medical-device discipline. An 8000W fiber laser cut the body and panels with nitrogen assist to keep thin aluminum flat, while a 9-axis press brake with custom micro-jigs formed the rounded profile. Conductive silicone gaskets were laser-cut and bonded under laser alignment to guarantee continuous EMI shielding, and electroless nickel plating gave the aluminum body a smooth, corrosion-resistant 10um finish.

FEA-optimized internal ribs delivered a 25% weight cut while retaining 95% of the strength of a thicker shell, and CMM feedback with SPC held every batch to +/-0.03mm.

5Actual Benefits

The 3,000 units shipped five days early with a 100% pass rate across CMM, 1,000-hour salt-spray, EMI shielding (over 60dB) and IP65 tests.

After eight months across 50-plus clinical and field environments, the client reported a 32% drop in device maintenance requests and a 20% rise in customer satisfaction, then signed a three-year partnership covering five new instrument series.
